Your New Home Has a Vivint System—Now What?

Sep 30, 2024|

For homebuyers, smart home systems are in demand; in fact, over 70% of homebuyers look for smart home automation features while house-hunting.

If you’re lucky enough to purchase a house that already has Vivint smart home technology installed—congratulations! You have the best home security system on the market ready and waiting to protect your home and family.

In order to start using your new system, here are a few things you’ll need to do to ensure the system is up and running in your name.

New house, new system

If there is an existing Vivint system in your new home, it will likely include some of the most common Vivint equipment and smart home security devices, including:

  • Smart Hub control panel, which is the Vivint panel near the entryway of your home (usually by the front door or entry from an attached garage door)
  • Motion sensors inside the home
  • Door and window sensors (and possibly glass break sensors) to detect unauthorized entry via doors and windows
  • Safety alarms, including smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors

Vivint systems are designed to be paired with Vivint services that include 24/7 professional monitoring, which means your home will be protected around the clock. In the event you are away from home and an alarm goes off or there is an emergency in your home, the monitoring center will ensure emergency responders are sent to your home.

How to put your Vivint system in your name

In order to take advantage of the existing system in your new home, you will need to contact Vivint and have an account set up in your name. Here’s how:

Once your system is up and running, make sure you download the Vivint App. The app will help you manage your entire smart home—including checking the status of your system, monitoring cameras, controlling your smart home devices, and contacting customer service—right from your phone.

Customizing your new system

One of the best things about a Vivint system is the ability to customize it for your home and family’s specific needs. Even if the previous owner already had Vivint in their home, you can easily add on to your system with additional smart devices.

Some things to consider include:

  • Smart locks. One of the first things homeowners are told to do when they buy a new home is change the door locks—and for good reason, too. You don’t know how many people, including the previous owners, have keys to your home. Smart locks, which use a unique code and keypad instead of a physical key, make this simple. You can also lock and unlock your door from anywhere with the Vivint app.
  • Security cameras. Placing wifi security cameras throughout your home and property can help deter break-ins while allowing you to keep an eye on your home, inside and out. Vivint cameras include the following:
    • The Doorbell Camera Pro sends you notifications when someone comes to your door or leaves a package. Remotely answer your door or rest easy knowing that with Smart Deter technology, unattended packages are proactively protected from porch pirates.
    • The Outdoor Camera Pro not only gives you a view of your property, but also identifies and discourages lurkers.
    • The Indoor Camera Pro can double as a nanny cam, pet cam, or let you keep an eye on sensitive areas like gun cabinets or safes. It also features two-way talk and has a one-touch callout button, so family can get ahold of you quickly.
  • Smart thermostat. Smart thermostats learn your temperature preferences and detect whether you’re home or not, then adjust the temperature automatically to help you save energy and money.
  • Garage door control, which allows you to open and close your garage door from your phone no matter where you are. You’ll also get notifications whenever your door opens (or is left open).
  • Professional installation. All Vivint systems include professional installation at no added cost, so you don’t have to worry about DIY.

When you call to activate your panel, you can also speak to a Vivint sales rep about pricing, device functionality, upfront costs versus payment plans, or anything else you may have questions about. And if you plan to move from your new home eventually—don’t worry. You can still take your system with you to your next home, and Vivint will help you do it.
