Everything You Need to Know About the Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2)

Jan 03, 2023|

When it comes to home security devices, homeowners have plenty of options to choose from to protect their homes.

According to a recent survey, home security cameras are the most popular home security choice for protecting property, followed by home security systems. Given how advanced many cameras are, these findings aren’t surprising—surveillance cameras essentially give you an extra set (or two) of eyes, so you know what’s going on around your property at any given moment.

The Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) is one of the most advanced outdoor security cameras on the market today, with a wealth of features that work together with your Vivint system to ensure your home is as protected on the outside as it is inside.

What is the Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2)?

The latest Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro is a feature-rich, wi-fi outdoor surveillance camera that provides clear high-resolution footage day and night. It includes all the premium security features of the original and combines them with improvements that provide more enhanced images and improved functionality, including:

  • Improved image quality and detail
  • New computer vision chip that provides enhanced person detection capabilities
  • Built-in SD card with 24/7 video recording and improved clip loading speed
  • Integration with new Spotlight Pro

Like its predecessor, it features proprietary Smart Deter technology, which works to identify lurkers on your property, then illuminates and plays a warning tone to let them know they’ve been spotted.

Other noteworthy features of the Outdoor Camera Pro include:

  • Crystal clear, 4k Ultra HD picture
  • 140° field of view
  • Night vision sensors
  • Two-way audio and HD video
  • HD Zoom
  • Motion detection and automatic video recording

As part of a Vivint Security System, it integrates with other security devices, including the Spotlight Pro. Spotlight Pro integrates with the latest version of the Outdoor Camera Pro, essentially working together as a floodlight cam that detects people on your property, then shines a floodlight on them to let them know they are visible. Along with the camera’s Smart Deter feature, it’s the best way to deter potential criminals and prevent property crimes before they occur.

Indoor vs. outdoor security cameras

When it comes to outdoor home security cameras in general, they can be broken down into two basic categories: indoor and outdoor. Although they both provide the same basic function (record and allow you to view specific areas of your home and property), there are some key differences between indoor and outdoor cameras to keep in mind:

Materials used

Unlike indoor cameras, outdoor cameras (including video doorbells) need to be able to withstand the elements like rain and snow, as well as more extreme temperatures. As a result, outdoor cameras are typically housed in weather-proof casing.

Indoor cameras, on the other hand, are made to operate inside homes with consistent temperatures. They’re typically more lightweight and aren‘t weather-resistant, as they don’t need protection against the elements.

Features

Features that are important in an outdoor camera aren’t necessarily needed in an indoor camera. For example, Smart Deter is a feature designed for the Outdoor Camera Pro and Doorbell Camera Pro because they work to prevent criminals from entering the home.

Indoor cameras also have features that are only useful for indoor use, such as the one-touch callout feature on the Vivint Indoor Camera.

Portability

Most outdoor cameras, including Wi-Fi cameras, are mounted to a specific location and are typically hardwired and plug in to an outlet nearby. This helps ensure your camera is always-on rather than running on batteries. Video doorbells are also meant to be fixed to one spot, although they can be battery-powered as well.

Indoor cameras, on the other hand, are often battery-powered and wire-free to allow for greater portability around the house. The downside to this is having to remember to get rechargeable batteries or change them when battery life gets low.

Given the differences between the two, it’s important not to try and use an indoor camera outdoors and vice-versa.

Hard-wired or wi-fi connection

Outdoor and indoor cameras‘ connectivity to your wi-fi network will differ as well. Outdoor cameras often use wired internet connections to get the best reception, while indoor cameras are typically closer to your home’s Internet router and can operate on wi-fi alone.

The Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) combines the two, using a hybrid wi-fi connection so your footage comes in clear with less buffering.

Why you need the Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2)

An outdoor security camera is an essential component of any security camera system, providing benefits such as:

  • Burglary prevention
  • Police assistance, if identification or proof is needed
  • Additional surveillance around swimming pools, lakes, or other potentially dangerous areas
  • Ability to see who is coming and going from your home

But not all outdoor home security cameras are created equal—when it comes to features, the Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) is a stand-out among the rest. Take a look at a few things you’ll love about it:

Smart home security camera that proactively protects your home

The Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) is the only home security camera that prevents crime with Smart Deter technology. Combining advanced analytics with an 85-db speaker, Smart Deter kicks into action when a person is spotted lurking on your property. (Smart Deter’s person detection is further enhanced in the latest generation thanks to a new computer vision chip). It then play a loud warning tone through the speaker and illuminates the camera‘s LED ring.

The lurker knows they’ve been spotted and they’re on camera, helping to prevent break-ins before they occur.

Crystal clear image with 4k sensor and night vision

What good is an outdoor camera if the picture is too fuzzy to see? Not a problem with the Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2). It boasts a 4k sensor and improved image quality, so you’ll be able to view your footage in 1080p HD. You can even zoom in without losing image quality, so you can see important details like license plate numbers or faces. Its 140° field of view means you’ll see more, too.

Another must-have in any outdoor camera is night vision. The Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) features high-powered night vision sensors that let you see clearly even when it’s dark out—without compromising video quality.

Check in from anywhere

Whether you’re in the house or in another state, you’ll always be able to check in on your property. You can view your footage in real-time or watch recorded clips from your smartphone or Smart Hub (your smart home’s base station).

You’ll also receive notifications whenever the camera‘s motion detection spots a person (not cars, tree branches, or other things). The two-way voice and one-way video feature allows you to both see and speak the people on your property.

Customizable surveillance zones

If there are specific areas on your property you’d like to focus on, such as a swimming pool or outbuilding, you can set a designated detection zone. Whenever anyone crosses into this area, you’ll immediately get a notification on your smartphone.

Never miss a thing with 24/7 video recording

The newest Outdoor Camera Pro features a built-in SD card for 24/7 monitoring and recording without the need for a separate cloud storage drive. Built-in video storage has a number of benefits, including faster, smoother video playback.

It also provides continuous recording, even if your wi-fi connection is lost.

Compatibility with other smart home security products

The Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) integrates seamlessly with your Vivint smart home devices. For example, you can pair your camera with Car Guard, activating Smart Deter if lurkers approach your vehicle while it’s parked on the street or in the driveway.

For even greater outdoor security, Outdoor Camera Pro (Gen 2) also pairs with one of Vivint’s newest devices, the Spotlight Pro, providing the added benefits of a floodlight camera. This add-on works by shining a floodlight on lurkers when your camera is in Deter Mode, then follows them around to let them know they’ve been spotted (the last thing a burglar wants!).
