15 Custom Actions that will Simplify Your Life

Let’s face it, we all have a lot going on in our day-to-day lives. The more we can automate small tasks to make our lives a little easier, the more time we have for what’s really important.

If you’re a Vivint customer, you already know we provide peace of mind with our award-winning security service. But did you know your devices can perform custom actions to make your life even more convenient?

What are custom actions?

Custom actions are simple, customizable rules your Vivint system will follow that you can set up with just a few taps in the Vivint app. For example, you can have your system automatically lock your front door whenever your security system is armed. Depending on your setup and what products you have installed in your home, the possibilities for customization are endless.

You can set up your own custom actions by opening the Vivint app, tapping the menu icon in the upper-left corner, and then tapping “Custom Actions.” If you experience any issues, please contact Vivint customer support.

Vivint has provided some recommended customizations to get you started, but you can also create your own. To help you better understand what’s possible within your system, we’ve shared the 10 most popular custom actions among current Vivint customers.


1. Notification when system is armed

Have an authorized user on your account? With this custom action, you will receive a notification via the Vivint mobile app whenever they arm the system as “staying” or “leaving.” This way you always know when your home is secure.

2. Notification when system is disarmed

Like the previous action, this is a great way to stay up to date with the status of your alarm system. If an authorized user has disarmed your system, you'll be notified right away.

3. Notification when a person is detected

If you have a Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro or Doorbell Camera Pro, you can receive a notification if your camera detects a person on your property.

4. Record when a door is opened

With Vivint Door Sensors, you can set a custom action so that your cameras will record a video clip whenever a door opens.

5. Notification when a door is opened

A further customization on the previous action, rather than recording a video clip when a door is opened, you’ll receive a notification via the Vivint mobile app.

6. Record when people are detected

With motion detectors installed, you can set up a custom action for your Indoor Camera to record every time it detects a person.

7. Record when an alarm is triggered

When an alarm is triggered, you want to see what’s going on around and inside your home right away. This custom action will capture the action and ensure you are in the know.

8. Notification when a clip is recorded

Let’s say you’re at work or on vacation when your camera captures a video clip. This custom action will send you a notification so you can see what’s going on while you are away.

9. Notification when motion is detected

This is another great custom action that will let you know when movement is detected in your home.

10. Notification when doorbell rings

If you like to work out at home with headphones in, this custom action is for you. This rule will send a notification to your phone so you know when you have a visitor even if you don't hear the doorbell ring.

What more custom actions aren’t in the top 10 but that are still worth a try? Check out these bonus actions:

1. Notification when a light is left on

Leaving a light on all night is wasteful, and this custom action will help you save money by alerting you to lights that have been left on around your home.

2. Garage closes when system is armed

You likely check your doors to make sure they’re all closed when you arm your system, but what about your garage? This custom action automatically closes your garage door when the system is armed.

3. Disarm system when door is unlocked

If you forgot that you or an authorized user armed your system, this custom action could help prevent a false alarm by disarming the system when your door is unlocked.

4. Notification when thermostat mode is changed

The thermostat might be the most closely controlled device in your home, and this custom action will let you know when things switch from hot to cold in a second.

5. Light turns on when motion is detected

Heading down to the kitchen for a late-night snack? Set up this custom action so that your lights turn on when they notice you moving around.
