What makes a beach town safer for snowbirds?

For snowbirds seeking a warm escape during the colder months, finding the perfect beach destination is about more than just sun and sand — safety is also a top priority.

To help travelers choose wisely, we researched well-known beach towns across the United States, all known for their picturesque settings and ideal winter weather. Using data from multiple sources, we evaluated key factors to determine the safest beach towns for snowbirds this winter.

Safest beaches for snowbirds ranked

We ranked 50 coastal towns based on safety factors, climate, and amenities to help snowbirds find the best beach destinations for a worry-free winter getaway.

Florida dominated the best destinations, with four of the top five safest beach towns located in the Sunshine State. These Florida towns offer warm weather and a sense of security for travelers seeking peace of mind.

New Smyrna Beach, Florida, was the safest beach town for snowbirds, followed by Venice, Florida, and Half Moon Bay, California, rounding out the top three.

At the other end of the list, Miami Beach, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, ranked as the least safe for snowbirds. Despite their popularity as vacation hotspots, their higher crime rates lowered them in our safety rankings.

Beach town breakdown

While the previous ranking looked at overall safety, here we break down the top and bottom beach towns by specific factors like crime rates, lifeguard availability, and average winter temps.

For snowbirds, low crime rates are essential for ensuring peace of mind during longer stays. A low property crime rate means less risk of theft or vandalism, which has made Marco Island, Florida — with a rate of just 5.19 incidents per 1,000 residents — especially appealing for a secure and quiet retreat. Similarly, Half Moon Bay, California, had a low rate of 7.25, providing a safer option for snowbirds looking for a winter escape with fewer worries about property crime.

Unfortunately, Miami Beach sat at the opposite end of the safety spectrum with the highest property crime rate, 84.62 incidents per 1,000 residents. Violent crime also varied significantly, with Palm Beach, Florida, having had the lowest violent crime rate of just 0.22 incidents per 1,000 residents, while Pismo Beach, California, had the highest (12.06).

Beyond crime rates, other factors also play a key role in safety and comfort. For those seeking well-staffed beaches, Santa Cruz, California, and Daytona Beach, Florida, led the way with the most lifeguards per 1,000 workers, providing extra protection for beachgoers.

Access to urgent care is also important for treating illness and injury while away from home. Galveston Island, Texas, ranked highest for medical access, followed closely by Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna Beach in Florida.

California's Carmel-by-the-Sea, Half Moon Bay, and Malibu had the highest percentage of highly rated bars and restaurants for snowbirds looking to enjoy local amenities. These towns have prioritized safety and provided a rich dining and social experience, making them ideal destinations for winter travelers and residents.

Choosing the right beach town for a safe winter escape

Safety is a key consideration for snowbirds seeking the perfect beach destination for the winter. These towns have been havens for security and comfort, whether due to low crime rates or ample lifeguard coverage. While popular destinations like Miami Beach may have ranked lower in terms of safety, beachgoers can find peace of mind in the many towns that offer scenic views and a safer environment for an extended winter stay.
