why solar incentives are so important

Reduce costs, speed
up payback

Solar energy is cheaper and more efficient than it used to be, but still only makes up 2% of all electricity generated in the U.S. The government offers energy rebates, tax credits, subsidies, low-interest loans, and more to encourage solar adoption.

Going solar? These incentive programs will help cut project costs and get you a faster return on investment.

federal solar incentives

Federal Solar Investment

Tax Credit (Solar ITC)

The Solar ITC is available to all U.S. residents who owe federal taxes. With it, a portion of your project costs can be deducted from your tax obligation, reducing the amount of taxes that you may owe. The credit is currently worth 26% of your project costs. In 2023, it reduces to 22%, and then expires for residential projects at the start of 2024. As an example, on a $10,000 solar project, the credit would reduce your tax liability by $2,600, which may significantly speed up your
payback period.

state solar incentives

Solar tax credits available

by state

There are also state solar incentives and city-level programs available to encourage solar adoption. In most cases, state and local programs combine with the federal incentive, meaning you may save even more. Solar incentives vary among states and utility companies, and rebate levels can fluctuate. Give us a call for the most up-to-date information about current state solar incentives.

energy rebates

Get a partial refund
upfront with solar
rebates

Energy rebates work exactly like rebates for other consumer purchases: You buy a solar power system and get cash back for it. Typically, this involves purchasing a solar energy system, then filing for a rebate with your local government, utility company, or other organization running the rebate program. Cash rebates are a simple way to save more immediately on your Vivint smart energy system.

solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs)

Be compensated for
your energy credits

In participating states, homeowners receive energy credits for the solar power they produce, called Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs). State regulations require utility companies to generate a certain amount of electricity from renewable sources. Utility companies buy SRECs from homeowners to meet these requirements. In short, you are compensated for generating clean energy.

Performance-Based Incentives (PBIs)

Get paid for your solar
power production

A performance-based incentive (PBI) awards a flat-rate payout per kWh of solar energy produced by your solar panels. While SRECs represent the environmental attributes of solar generation (i.e., emission reduction), PBIs provide an incentive for the electricity produced. Governed by your net metering agreement, PBIs don’t have to be sold through a market, and incentive rates are determined when the system is installed.

Other types of solar incentives

  • Money Icon
    Tax credits

In addition to the federal Solar ITC available to all U.S. citizens, some states have their own state solar tax credit in place.

  • Shield Icon
    Low-interest loans

Loans with below-market interest rates are often available to homeowners for renewable energy projects.

  • House Icon
    Property tax relief

In certain states, solar energy systems are exempt from property taxes, reducing the homeowner’s tax burden.
