Frequently Asked Questions

How does a water sensor work?

Flood or water sensors are small devices placed near areas in your home that are prone to flooding or leaks. If water is detected, it will sound an alarm so you can act quickly before serious damage occurs.

Smart water sensors from Vivint expand protection from water damage with the following:

  • Moisture monitoring. They alert you of excess moisture before even water is detected. You can take action before a minor leak becomes a major issue.
  • Temperature monitoring. Freezing temps can quickly lead to burst pipes and costly damage. Vivint Water Sensors detect drops in temperature, notifying you before costly damage occurs.
  • Alerts and notifications. An alarm doesn't help when you're not around to hear it. If a Vivint Water Sensor goes off, you'll immediately be alerted on your smartphone.

Where should water sensors be placed?

Water sensors should be placed in areas of your home that are prone to flooding or leaks—especially basements. Approximately 98% of basements in the U.S. will experience water damage at some point.

You should also consider placing water sensors near certain pipes and appliances that could potentially leak, including:

  • Air conditioners. When air conditioners run, they collect moisture from the air, which can turn into leaks if faulty or not properly maintained.
  • Water heaters. Faulty drains or outlets can also cause leaks from your water heater. Without a sensor, leaks can go undetected and significant damage can occur.
  • Pipes. Specifically pipes that could potentially freeze and rupture during winter months and cause flooding.
  • Sump pumps. Sump pumps are used in basements to collect groundwater before it can enter your basement. If a sump pump stops working, it results in expensive damage.
  • Leaky pipes. Leaking pipes from toilets, tubs and showers, garbage disposals, or any other pipe in the home can cause damage if left unchecked.
  • Kitchen appliances. Dishwashers, garbage disposals, refrigerators, and freezers are all prone to leaks that can damage flooring, cabinets, and appliances in your kitchen.
  • Washing machines. The average washing machine uses 16 gallons per load. If a pipe becomes loose or damaged, this water can end up all over your laundry room floor.

While these are some of the most common sources, they’re not an exhaustive list. Water damage can occur throughout your home from many different sources. A Vivint professional can help you determine the best locations for water sensors in your home.

How are water leaks detected?

Simple. Water sensors do the work. Place them next to appliances, toilets, pipes, or basement windows that could potentially leak. The sensors detect increases in moisture and water before serious damage occurs and notify you via your smartphone. Early detection gives you the opportunity to quickly address the situation and fix the issue before things get out of hand, saving you time, money and headaches.

What is a water leak sensor?

Water leak sensors are small devices that monitor the presence of water, moisture and, in some cases, temperature levels. Placed in areas of your home prone to leaks or flooding, they’ll alert you if moisture, water or freezing temperatures are detected so you can take action before a pipe bursts or costly water damage occurs.
