Vivint, one of the largest home automation companies in North America, awarded $1.25 million to the winners of its 2011 Vivint Gives Back Project, an online charitable campaign that benefits non-profit organizations throughout the United States and Canada.

Vivint made the announcement and awarded the winners in a ceremony at its Provo, Utah headquarters. Representatives from each nonprofit group, as well as recipient of the groups’ services, were on hand for the celebration. Winning charities include:

GRAND PRIZE: $250,000

Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics, Aurora, IL

Team Sanfilippo Foundation, Saratoga Springs, NY

CURED Foundation, Lincolnshire, IL

Whittemore Peterson Institute, Reno, NV

Utah Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, Salt Lake City

CANADA: $100,000

Light and Love Home, Vancouver, BC

“We are extremely grateful to the voters on Facebook and the open-hearted folks at Vivint for this tremendous infusion not only of cash, but also of hope,” said Paula Evans, chairperson for Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST). “As an all-volunteer organization dedicated to finding a cure for people who suffer from a rare neuro-genetic disorder, we feel a profound sense of solidarity with the Vivint employees who have volunteered so much of their time and resources to bring us closer to curing Angelman Syndrome and other debilitating neurological disorders.”

Vivint also awarded two wildcard prizes of $25,000 apiece to CHERUBS and Gracehaven Home. Of the total amount donated, $1 million came from the company and employee donations. The remaining $250,000 was generated by the charities’ supporters, who made donations during several matching periods.

Throughout the contest, which ran from April 25 through August 27, fans of Vivint’s Facebook page nominated and voted for their favorite charities. The second phase of the contest narrowed the field to 100 regional finalists.

Contest Stats:

  • Total donated: $1.25 million awarded to eight charities in the U.S. and Canada. Vivint and its employees donated $1 million, with the remaining $250,000 coming from individual charity supporters
  • Total votes: Over 2 million votes were cast.
  • Social media engagement: Participants in the contest saw significant increases in their social media audiences and traffic. The Grand Prize winner alone garnered over 300,000 votes. Vivint’s own Facebook fan base jumped from about 4,000 to 328,500 fans.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed at the response of the Vivint Gives Back Project this year,” said Josh Houser, president of Vivint Gives Back, the company’s charitable division. “Making positive contributions to the communities in which we work is a core value of our company, and it all starts with individual employees. We are extremely proud of them for driving this effort, and for the personal donations they contributed. And we are so honored to have had the opportunity to get to know and support organizations that do such important, life-changing work.”

About Vivint Gives Back

The Vivint Gives Back project was created to focus the efforts of the employees at Vivint on banding together to alleviate hardship and restore hope for people in need. Through this program, Vivint employees have the opportunity to contribute time and resources to service projects ranging from clean-up efforts in the aftermath of the Joplin, Missouri tornado, to providing meals at a Ronald McDonald House and adopting a local elementary school where our employees mentor and tutor students at risk in a long term relationship.

The 2010 Vivint Gives Back Project awarded $250,000 to the six organizations that received the most votes. Overall, fans nominated 263 non-profits and cast more than 260,000 votes. During the project, employees also participated in 7,500 hours of community service. Security Sales & Integration magazine recognized the project as the “Best Community Outreach Program” with a 2011 SAMMY Award.
