build your own neighborhood – house 8

This week’s printable neighborhood house is in honor of New York. I’ve been dreaming about its neighborhoods and boroughs all week long. There is something so iconic about the idea of a Manhattan neighborhood. Now, I don’t live there, and probably never will. Which is why it probably keeps all of its charm.

For those of us who don’t live in NYC, it’s clear our fascination comes from movies and television. We all knew what New York was early on—if nothing else, from watching Sesame Street. Or how about The Muppets Take Manhattan? What a classic; I love watching that with my daughter now! I think I will always want to live in a converted firehouse or a rickety warehouse after 80’s movies like Ghostbusters and Big. And of course, New York is synonymous with romantic comedies like You’ve Got Mail. Or one of my favorite sappy flicks: Serendipity. I had a mental list of places to visit after watching that movie (and yes, the frozen hot chocolate is outstanding). And I think women everywhere wanted to move to Manhattan when watching Sex and The City. Oh, to be Carrie Bradshaw.

What is your ideal neighborhood? If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? In my twenties, I would have said New York in a heartbeat. But I’m finding now, as I settle into my thirties, suddenly New York seems a bit too much (and realistically, too expensive!) for my family. But, we can still dream big. And in my movie dreams, I live in a crazy brownstone like this printable house, with a huge skylight and an orange front door.

  1. Download and print.
  2. Cut out your house and tree along their edges.
  3. Fold all of the creases before getting out the glue (both the house’s corners and the tabs)
  4. Then, with a glue stick, glue a couple tabs at a time, assembling as you go. Start at the inside corner of the house and work towards the final side tab.
  5. The tree needs no glue, just cut the two blue lines, and slip the stand into the base of the tree trunk.
  6. Enjoy!
